That Bilbo is Quoteable!

I know I have referenced the Quote canvas a couple of times on our Autumn list and I am extremely happy to say that it is complete! I love it and it was a very cost effective piece of art for our home and it was definitely worth the effort.

We got the quote from Lord of the Rings, one of our favorite books and movies. The quote is:

"Its a dangerous business, going out of your door. You step, onto the road, and if you dont keep your feet, there is no knowing where you might be swept off to… ”

We thought this quote was perfect for hanging over the door, a reminder that our world is wonderful and you never know what is going to happen out there.

Thus started the journey of the quote canvas. First I found the font, we wanted something a little Celtic and epic looking, my first stop was www.dafont.com, my go-to for free fonts. We settled on Mael for our quote, see above.

Next stop was Aaron Brothers, they are always having great sales and I get coupons emailed and mailed to me all the time. I wanted to find a canvas that was large enough to take up some real estate above the door. We have super high ceilings and I wanted to capitalize on that height. So I rummaged around was able to get a 24" x 48" canvas for only $13. Pretty snazzy, right?! Next I hit our second-home, Lowes, and picked up some awesome spray paint. I went with the more expensive stuff that had primer because I did not want to do multiple coats and I was worried about it sticking to the canvas, so that was $7 total.

Now that I had the canvas, I could scale the quote to get transferred. Microsoft Word did not allow me to get the true-life size so I took 1/3 scale to see how I wanted it laid out. Once I got it to look the way I wanted, just increased the font size to 3x. I busted out my cardstock and printed the quote. This is the part that took forever and a day, I pulled out my trusty x-acto knife and started carefully cutting out each letter, making sure I had left a little for the innards of letters like 'a' or 'o'.

Once all the letters were cut out, I taped it to the canvas and took it all out to the garage. I put a canvas down on the floor and cut down some old cereal boxes to be buffers to the wild spray. I then just started spraying one word at a time with the cereal boxes surrounding each word. Then I let it take a little break for about 45 minutes to dry and allow myself to try to clean my hands. I came back and ripped the template off to be delighted! There was so excess spray and some drip drops around so I made it look intentional by spritzing the canvas a little all over and voila! Art for $20!!!
